Subject: Conference on Okinawan Identity and Cultural Sustainability 沖縄アイデンティティコンフレンス
Gusuuyo Chuuganabira,
We are happy to announce the first LooChoo(Ryukyu) Identity Conference to be held next March on the island of Maui.
LOOCHOO IDENTITY CONFERENCE
“NINUFWA BUSHI MII ATI” Looking At The North Star
FRIDAY, MARCH 20 through SUNDAY, MARCH 22, 2015 *Only 5 months away!!!
Preregistration $90 adults $60 student (includes dinner on Friday and Saturday evening, and lunch on Saturday and Sunday).
Late Registration (After January 30) $120 adults, $80 student
*SPACE IS LIMITED
The goal of this conference is to bring together Okinawa cultural groups, practitioners, educators, and others who are interested in the revitalization of Ryukuan/Okinawan Identity/Culture, to discuss identity and cultural sustainability for the future as we pass them on to the next generation. There will be representatives from the various islands as well as North America and Okinawa.
We hope that through discussion and presentations, participants can go back to their communities and groups with a better understanding of what being Oknawan is, and why there is a need for revitalization. We also hope that this will give a stronger connection to our Okinawa ties through our common connection through our ancestors .
We will gather in Maui for this first conference, as the Okinawa community there has been the first one to start a group dedicated to the revitalization of all aspects of Okinawan culture, history, language and identity, and has become self sustainable. It is from this first conference that we will gather our thoughts, supplies, and goals, as we prepare our Funi (boats) to travel into the future while looking back and using the values and traditions of the past, and also looking up at the north star which represents our ancestors who are always there to guide us.
We invite all who are interested in taking up the “kuleana”, responsibility of what was passed down to us, and share with others this information and gather with us in Maui for this first conference. We look forward to seeing you there as we share our culture, thoughts, and emotions over this first conference of “Loochoo Identity”.
Space is limited so please register early.
